Mai Yia and Her Purple Wheelchair is a story that helps readers learn about Hmong families who have children with disabilities. Some families feel worried or stressed because they want to take good care of their children and make sure they have what the children need. This book is based on Dr. Brian Xiong’s younger sister, Mai Yia, who was born with a disability. He shares her story to show everyone that children with disabilities can do many amazing things. It encourages families and individuals to be kind, include everyone in activities, and make sure places are easy for all children to enjoy. Mai Yia and Her Purple Wheelchair reminds us that all kids are special regardless of their special needs and disabilities. Together we build a better world for special children.

This book project is made possible through the support of the Coalition of Asian American Leaders’ Ignite Grant and partnership with the Hmong Educational Resources Publisher. Together, we’re committed to uplifting Asian American leaders and organizations in Minnesota by confronting long-standing inequities and fostering deeper, more meaningful investment in our diverse communities.
