TONG KOU LOR

TONG KOU LOR is a contributor to the new book “A Career in Student Affairs: Reflections from Hmong Student Affairs Educators.” In his chapter, titled "EMPOWERING YOURSELF THROUGH YOUR OWN STORY," Tong Kou shares with us about how storytelling and building relationships can empower others and create learning opportunities. His personal and professional experiences have fueled his passion for storytelling and fostering connections, allowing him to learn from those around him. By listening to others' stories, he is able to understand students' needs and determine the best ways to support them beyond the classroom.

“I want to support students in developing knowledge and skills in the classroom so they can better understand the stories of those that do not have access to higher education. I believe the stories of those who do not have access to higher education, are the stories that can amplify social change. Students with stories from individuals who lack education, can bring awareness and new studies to perspectives that are not present in college courses. So many students come into college with many different perspectives, it is essential to be able to understand and connect with students at their levels, be willing to understand and listen to their stories, and guide them to their destination…” - Tong Kou Lor.

A CAREER IN STUDENT AFFAIRS highlights the unique experiences of Hmong student affairs professionals from a wide range of professional levels, institutional settings, and functional areas. Each author shares a journey into student affairs and how this was navigated to become a student affairs career. Each chapter also concludes with advice for Hmong students who are considering a career in student affairs and provides insights for prospective and current Hmong college students. This book is a great resource for student affairs professionals, faculty, and institutional leaders working with Hmong students exploring career options in higher education. Because many of the professionals were the first in their family to enter higher education, reading their experiences can be very beneficial to many Hmong students.
