SARAH VANG
SARAH VANG is a contributor to the new book “A Career in Student Affairs: Reflections from Hmong Student Affairs Educators.” In her chapter, titled "THE TREK OF A LIFELONG LEARNER," Sarah emphasized the importance of helping students navigate higher education. In discussions with others, she highlighted the process of obtaining an education and facilitating the transition to college. She hopes that through admissions, she can provide valuable first interactions for students seeking information and support about higher education. She recognized that understanding the students she serves requires knowledge of how their roles and responsibilities outside of academics intersect with their studies. This insight motivated her to take on her position as the Assistant Director of Admission, where she trains admission counselors in student service and engagement.
“To future Hmong student affairs professionals, a career in this area can be challenging and fulfilling all at once. There may be times when you question your every move and make mistakes with assigned tasks, but these moments are opportunities to uphold integrity and learn…” - Sarah Vang.
A CAREER IN STUDENT AFFAIRS highlights the unique experiences of Hmong student affairs professionals from a wide range of professional levels, institutional settings, and functional areas. Each author shares a journey into student affairs and how this was navigated to become a student affairs career. Each chapter also concludes with advice for Hmong students who are considering a career in student affairs and provides insights for prospective and current Hmong college students. This book is a great resource for student affairs professionals, faculty, and institutional leaders working with Hmong students exploring career options in higher education. Because many of the professionals were the first in their family to enter higher education, reading their experiences can be very beneficial to many Hmong students.
