KATHY MOUA
KATHY MOUA is a contributor to the new book “A Career in Student Affairs: Reflections from Hmong Student Affairs Educators.” In her chapter, titled "A LETTER TO YOU, 10 YEARS FROM NOW," Kathy expresses her joy and passion for working with diverse students, emphasizing that education extends beyond just professionals or students. What we learn can be shared at home, and her students often tell her they share their experiences with their parents. These moments are especially valuable for immigrant or refugee parents who may not have had the opportunity for higher education. She feels immense happiness when she sees her students’ families attending events at her center. She continues to inspire others, particularly those who haven't had the chance to attend college, to believe in themselves, dream, and embrace learning again.
“This is what gives me the strength to continue. I believe work should breathe life into you, not drain it - and education, in the many ways that it can touch and inspire the lives it reaches, sustains me…” - Kathy Moua.
A CAREER IN STUDENT AFFAIRS highlights the unique experiences of Hmong student affairs professionals from a wide range of professional levels, institutional settings, and functional areas. Each author shares a journey into student affairs and how this was navigated to become a student affairs career. Each chapter also concludes with advice for Hmong students who are considering a career in student affairs and provides insights for prospective and current Hmong college students. This book is a great resource for student affairs professionals, faculty, and institutional leaders working with Hmong students exploring career options in higher education. Because many of the professionals were the first in their family to enter higher education, reading their experiences can be very beneficial to many Hmong students.
