DR. SHIMEL HERSAYCHOU-LEE

DR. SHIMEL HERSAYCHOU-LEE is a contributor to the new book “A Career in Student Affairs: Reflections from Hmong Student Affairs Educators.” In her chapter, titled "BRIDGING WORLDS: A HMONG WOMAN’S JOURNEY IN STUDENT AFFAIRS," Dr. HerSaychou-Lee shares with us about the struggle of balancing these conflicting worlds and identities, where the clash of cultural norms, practices, and expectations served as a continual backdrop to her personal growth. This dual framework created an intricate blend of choices and expectations, demanding that she navigates societal norms while also carving out her own path.

“On one side, a world of boundless opportunities awaited, urging women to pursue their aspirations and carve paths towards independence, emphasizing the importance of self-determination. Simultaneously, a contrasting reality existed where societal expectations dictated what women should prioritize their role within their future family. Confronting the clash of conflicting narratives, I found myself standing at the intersection of tradition and ambition. My quest was to harmonize the demands of familial expectations with my personal aspirations, navigating the delicate balance between the two…” - Dr. Shimel HerSaychou-Lee.

A CAREER IN STUDENT AFFAIRS highlights the unique experiences of Hmong student affairs professionals from a wide range of professional levels, institutional settings, and functional areas. Each author shares a journey into student affairs and how this was navigated to become a student affairs career. Each chapter also concludes with advice for Hmong students who are considering a career in student affairs and provides insights for prospective and current Hmong college students. This book is a great resource for student affairs professionals, faculty, and institutional leaders working with Hmong students exploring career options in higher education. Because many of the professionals were the first in their family to enter higher education, reading their experiences can be very beneficial to many Hmong students.
