ANDREW YANG

ANDREW YANG is a contributor to the new book “A Career in Student Affairs: Reflections from Hmong Student Affairs Educators.” In his chapter, titled "MY STUDENT AFFAIRS JOURNEY: A HMONG SON'S REFLECTION," Andrew shares with us about becoming a model figure for the Hmong community and Hmong students on campus.

“In my role, I have had many opportunities to support students in their academic pursuits. I remember a defining interaction with a student that occurred during my first few weeks as the APIDA Center Coordinator back in fall 2022. A student who identified as Hmong American walked into my office seeking guidance on the topic of getting married at the age of 20. He discussed that there were pressures from elders and parents to marry, have kids, and get a job to help his parents pay bills while completing his education. The student was breaking down due to the expectations from family, school, and himself. I saw myself in that student. I understood what it felt like to have so many expectations on your shoulders…” - Andrew Yang.

A CAREER IN STUDENT AFFAIRS highlights the unique experiences of Hmong student affairs professionals from a wide range of professional levels, institutional settings, and functional areas. Each author shares a journey into student affairs and how this was navigated to become a student affairs career. Each chapter also concludes with advice for Hmong students who are considering a career in student affairs and provides insights for prospective and current Hmong college students. This book is a great resource for student affairs professionals, faculty, and institutional leaders working with Hmong students exploring career options in higher education. Because many of the professionals were the first in their family to enter higher education, reading their experiences can be very beneficial to many Hmong students.
